A Christmas Gift To My Mom by Matt Larson

A Christmas Gift To My Mom by Matt Larson

I wanted this year to be extra special for my Mom. Even though she never understood money (and still doesn't) she always told me I was a winner. She told me I could do anything I wanted. She told me nothing could stop me if I worked hard enough. She told me to never give up. Even though she was always filled with self doubt about her life, she thought I was unstoppable.

2 Fathers Days ago I retired my Dad. I was tired of watching him beat himself up at the machine shop where I used to work. He lived in extreme pain every single day. He has had a tough life. 2 knee replacements, quadruple by pass heart surgery, a heart attack, super dangerous back surgery, broken leg, elbow surgery, knocked unconsious, hospital emergency trips, etc. (by the way my Dad never had health insurance and he never once said "the government should provide it for me"). But the biggest reason I wanted to retire my Dad was because he said it would never be possible for him to retire. He always said he would work until he was dead. I wanted to prove him wrong. And I did.

So I called my Mom 2 weeks before Christmas and asked her how much money she made at her job. She asked me why do I need to know that. I said just tell me. So she told me and I said, "I will double your salary if you quit your job." She couldn't believe it. She has wanted to leave her job for years. She just couldn't afford it. But I can. It took her 2 days to stop crying. The stress removed from her has been amazing. Her last day was December 23rd. She is 61 years old and life is about to begin:)

When I got into real estate I knew someday I could get them their freedom. Even though they had given up on themselves years ago I knew it would be possible.

The Bible says a good man takes care of the generation before them and 2 generations after them. I'm 36 years old and I have already done both. I don't have kids but my grandkids are already taken care by what I have put in place. Hundreds of rental properties will do that.

The next time you think that real estate is too hard or you don't have time remember you are being selfish. Think of the joy you can bring to the generations you may not even know yet. Think of all the people you could help because you have been given this gift of knowledge about how to create money from nothing.

It's worth it.

Matt

It's all about giving. That was my plan also to take care of my wife, kids and grandchildren. We need a few more props to make this happen, but it is in the works. You are right in saying that we have been given special knowledge to create the wealth that we need for our families. Great post Matt...Jan

that's awsome matt

my mother is one of those that doesn't think bigger than poverty, but in her lifetime i want to do the same for her. she still won't overspend and she won't appreciate fully what i want to do, but i want her to live the rest of her days knowing money is no longer an issue for her.

Christmas Gift

That is so great Matt. You have not only changed your life , but so many others, including so many just on this site. You have changed mine, I actually want to do this for my mother , even though she was laid off and un - employment is about to run out.By following you for a very long time, I have taped in my car that July 26 2012, I will be doing this full time (NO MATTER WHAT) .Everyday I do something, usually alot toward this goal. Thanks for all that you do and the lives that you have changed.
Also of course Dean, if it wasnt for Dean none of this would be happening !!!
Thanks again Dean and Matt and everyone that contributes and gives back, I truly appreciate it !!

Best Regards,

Matt, you're so very sweet!

Matt, you're so very sweet! I want to do the same thing for my widower Dad! My best wishes for you to success forever!

WOW

That's an amazing and completely unselfish thing to do. I dream of doing that too someday. Hopefully sooner than later though. My mom is in the hospital as we speak fighting breast cancer. She has lost her home, and gotten divorced, and I'm her only child. I feel the weight of this situation like you can't believe. I unfortunately abandoned my REI business when this all started 5 months ago, but am in damage control mode now and am hoping to revamp my strategy and revitalize my contacts soon. Any advice?

Anyway, I'm sorry to have gone off on a tangent there... I have so many motivators for succeeding in this business. But your story is a perfect example of why I love this site. I need the inspiration to keep going. When you know that others have done what you dream of doing, it's empowering.

Thank you so much for sharing!

Your Gift

Thanks for sharing this with us all Matt. This has been one of my "why's" for being successful in real estate from the start for several family members of mine. Very powerful motivation! I enjoyed experiencing the feeling of attaining that goal through your post and it has fueled my determination even more to experience that feeling for myself - thanks and all continued best to you in 2012!

Matt

What a wonderful gift to give to both of your parents! I'm sure they are both tremendously proud of you. Thanks for sharing this.

You are a good man!

You are a good man and you are and will be blessed for being obedient!

That is so incredibly awesome and appreciate you sharing a glimpse of your heart.
When you said: "The next time you think that real estate is too hard or you don't have time remember you are being selfish. Think of the joy you can bring to the generations you may not even know yet. Think of all the people you could help because you have been given this gift of knowledge about how to create money from nothing." Rings so true! Very powerful! Wow, It so pierced me to the core (in a good way).

I will leave it better than I found it! To have others be better off because I lived!

I lost my father when I was 11. My mom remarried when I was 15. Now I'm 31 and my stepfather passed away in October. My parents didn't have burial or life insurance policies. They had cashed them in years ago. Through RE I was able to cover the expense of the funeral and I'm now able to provide/take care of my mom every month. She had no retirement and only drawed SS. Although she too 'thought' she was destined to poverty and barely getting by. I figured I'd change that for her!
It is MY responsibility!

I for one can say, I'm thankful to see more of your post. You never fail to leave a trail of blessings where ever you go! Thank you Matt!

You are the head, not the tail. You are blessed and you are highly favored!
You are blessed going in and you are blessed coming out!

May your cup always overflow!
God bless,
Jen

Very nice!

It's great to see that DG successful students are real people, and have big hearts.

What a story...

Thanks Matt for sharing it.

I think (or hope) we all want to do what you did for our parents and future generations as well. You've proven that RE is the vehicle to make that happen.
I'm taking the steps to make it happen.

The journey continues...

Thank you Matt

I see there are many of us with similar backgrounds with working class parents. My parents have also given up and I want to show them, but especially my siblings that they can overcome and not be bound by their life's circumstances. I really need to make this work this year and prove this to myself first. Thank you for the inspiration and all your tips and posts.

That's so awesome Matt. So

That's so awesome Matt. So great and selfless for you to give back to your parents like that. Mine are the same way, don't have a retirement set up and my mom thinks I can be successful but has the old mentality of don't take risks and stay safe which leads to no success. I really want to do this someday also retire my parents and take care of them like they took care of me for so many years. My dad is a real estate agent and teacher but does not believe in using deans techniques and doesn't understand them. It's sad to see so much potential in him if he would but he doesn't. He has always provided for my mom and myself and I want to make sure he and my mom can be taken care of when they need it. My dad isn't making much in the real estate market right now because he's not using deans techniques. He believes in me though. He says not to worry about them and to take care of my wife and myself but I have to care about them. My parents are both caught in debt trying to pay it off and live normal life at the same time. They are givers as well and thats one reason why I want to give back to them. I live in Lexington ky and Iam looking for a mentor to help me get started and get my first few deals done. Anybody looking to give back and mentor a beginner? I also to want to give back and train in every way I can once I reach that level of confidence and success.

Matt,

This post is so touching there are hardly any words. It's amazing to see what people can do when they put their mind to it and take action. Your posts always inspire me. Thank You for sharing your stories with the DG family.

Well All I Could Do Is Hold Back The Tears

Matt, you are indeed blessed and we all know why. You understand what giving back is all about. Both my parents are retired in their eighties and living comfortably. However, that does not get me off the hook. I have to provide for the grands yet to be in existence. Not much of a challenge though, already in motion. Thanks Matt for reminding us to not always think about ourselves, but to look over our shoulder to others. One of my goals for 2012 "Always remember to give back". God Bless.

Sandra

Lexington

I like your story, too. That's the passion you have, and the things you want to happen for others, and for yourself, because you see the GOOD it can do.

If you want to network freedom, I also live in Lexington. Maybe we can help each other & do a deal together?

I am moved by your stories!

I'm 30, which is crazy, and yes I believe anyone can provide miracles and bless the lives of others. Giving back, makes you feel good, too. Matt & Jennifer, thank you for the stories, and for all that you do to bring success in your lives!

Great stuff

Hi Matt and you have a heart of gold, I took care of my Mom and I put my life on hold the whole time, its was all about her having the best life possible and I have no regrets. It would of been nice to have Deans program and all of you to work with that would have been a ton of iceing on the cake. There is no greater joy than giving back and giving to others. And as I found out with out asking or looking for anything in return the Heavens open up in blessing I never thought were possible or existed and Id do it again in a heart beat she pasted away in Oct of 2000 and that was one of the sadest days of my life and it took 10 years to get my life back from the lost she was so humble and she would give you the shirt off her back. I took her down to buy some shoes and she wanted to buy some cheap ones and I loving told here Mom we arent doing that any more you have 2,000 in your checking account and I took out the check book that I had deposited that money in it for her and showed her she had the most awesome look on her face, she never had two dimes to rub together in her life let alone 2,000 an I told her we have a hold store full of shoes to pick from and she picked out a nice pair close to $90.00 and I told her how proud I was of her for picking out such a nice pair of shoes and she humbly look down at them and with a solf voice and a smile said yes. Heres the kicker she was on social security and they told me if I put any more money in her checking account they would penalize her social security check, this money came out of my pocket and not hers what a joke and people wonder why they cant get ahead. Matt I take my hat off to you and you will never regret what you have done and we all should take care of our own and any one else and helping brings so much joy. The rest of you had some great comments as well, isnt life so much fun and can we ever grow doing it, you bet dont let fear or anything else get in your way my beloved DGers Family, Jim

Matt this post is amazing

Every single day I think that one day I will be able to retire my mom and my dad.

I have been trying realestate for over a year now. I started puting offers to wholesale properties last year. and so far this year I have put arround 11 offers I am still waiting for my first deal and I feel it is close. Some times I have been close to give up on real estate but then posts like this give me strenght to keep going and trying.

Thank you for this words and taking the time to post.

success to all!!!!

It's Everybody's Dream....

Matt, you've done a wonderful thing, it touched my heart and brought tears to my eyes. I think that everybody on this site (and not only on this site) would like to do what you've done for your mom.I'm a woman, and of course I love to accept gifts, but I feel even more happier when I can give somebody something, it gives me a wondergul feeling. And if (I should say "when" instead of "if" though) I can do the same you've done, I will be the happiest person in the world. I'm sure your parents are proud of you, and you are are proud of yourself either.
I'm doing my first steps in RE investing, and stories like your's give me an inspiration, strength and hopes. Thank you for your story Matt.

Beautiful!

Peace of mind is the best gift you can give anyone and I hope to be able to do the same for people in my life as well.

Thanks for sharing...
