OK, I want to say that I get such a thrill out of doing this contest and that reading the up and comers reminds me how I was in that position once myself. I will not forget how difficult it is to both get started in REI as well as how much dedication it takes to turn a negative profit business to profitable again. I NEED YOUR HELP!
WE HAD ALMOST A VIRTUAL TIE FOR 2nd and 3rd; separated by only 0.2pts. This is a contest that is put up entirely by the DG family, NOT Dean, not his companies, not the coaches, but US here. I do not want to put the burden on Dean to come up with exorbitant amounts towards this contest when he already gives us so much of himself and his time.
If we can raise $5K for this, our 3rd place winner will get to goto the EDGE. We are at about $1100. We need about $3900. That is 390 more donators at $10 each **OR** if you have $20 to donate, that is only 185 people donating. Also, if we raise the $5000, we can do the contest again next year. Please, if you are able, contribute. If you are in a position where this isn't possible at all, it is totally understandable. Last year, James Kendrick ran a contest for people to WIN a chance to goto the Edge. This year I thought I'd start the thread!
First, we need for DGers who are out there making it happen to donate to the cause. Who's ever up for it, you can either email me with your donation amount or put it right here on this thread. No amount is too small or big 
The EDGE is an AWESOME learning opportunity. But, probably even more, its a great NETWORKING tool and an experience that can't be replicated.
Secondly, we need judges to vote on essays. To become a judge you need to be an active contributor to the sight and/or have done at least 4 deals. (both sides of the deals count). Please contact me at EDGE2012Contest at gmail dot com. Please, NO PMs about this. (I am not very good at organizing my PMs on this site).
Pay attention to this closely. Third, to enter the contest you will have to do 2 things. Write an essay that will convince the judges that YOU should be one of the person's chosen to goto the EDGE event. Second, you must be open to any of the judges contacting you either via email or phone. There will be 2 winners; more if there are more contributions to the cause. You also must be able to get to the EDGE and pay for lodging, as well as be able to make it on the days of the EDGE event (April 27-29). It is not required that you've completed a deal yet. Follow the directions carefully.
--Your essay should be kept more than 400 words, but kept under 1000 words and be about why we should choose YOU to goto the EDGE.
--You must also have filled out your entire DG profile and told us a little about yourself in your profile.
--You must include your name, your contact information (phone and email), your time zone, and your DG screen name at the beginning of your essay as a cover page.
--The title of your essay should be 'Gain the EDGE 2012 Essay, YOUR DG NAME', listed on your cover page.
--Pages, if you should go over 1, need to be numbered.
--You should post to this thread after you've sent your essay.
--Your essay should answer the following questions for the judges:
***Why you want to goto the EDGE?
***What REI means to you
***What will you do if you fail at any time?
***What you think it takes to be successful in REI?
***What will you do with the information you get at the Edge?
***What are you doing now and what have you done so far to build your REI?

Well how was it? Did I knock it out of the park?
I for one love a good and impossible challenge but as you saw with my essay sometimes bad things happen to good people. I've been told by many of my close friends it's time to move on so I'm ready and with this opportunity to attend this year’s EDGE in Arizona with Dean and his students I'm ready for action.
Wow the 14th is right around the corner. I'm so excited but whatever the outcome is this is an experience I won't soon forget.
By the way, I've got all the evaluators in my prayers. Trust me when I say I wouldn't want to be in their shoes right now. So good luck…

The competition in the EDGE essay event was fierce. You are ALL winners for submitting essays. As the evaluators, Jen, Judi, Rina and I are having a difficult time narrowing it down. We have narrowed it down to the top 10 and we will be making calls tomorrow to help us narrow it down to only 2. We're doing it a little different this year, and we want to be fair to all the efforts you put in. I know you are eagerly anticipating the results and we hate to postpone, but time constraints make this take a little longer than anticipated.
Please know if you wrote an essay, you took action and your efforts were not for nothing. You've given us a very difficult choice to make.
The final winners will be announced on Friday March 16. We apologize for having to postpone, but this is something we don't want to rush into. We are all volunteering and it is taking longer than anticipated to do the evaluating to make it fair. We will choose 2 backup winners as well in case the 2 chosen can not make their arrangements to get to the EDGE.
The hotel reservations, if staying where the even is taking place, need to be done before March 27th.

I had tried to start a thread, but I believe it got removed. But, here was the text of it:
Dean already provides so much for us RE wise, I was thinking something totally off the wall. Something that would take us away from RE for a few minutes and cause us all to have an EXCELLENT laugh and would be awesome to see. Imagine this.
We raise the $5K for the contest, and as a result Dean will have to do something irrelevant and something that will make us all laugh. I was thinking of creating a 5 minute extension on one day of the Edge event where Dean would be doing something that would be so entertaining and different the whole place would erupt in laughter. It would be recorded and shared here on the website. Laughter has some amazing qualities, and all work and no play makes it monotonous. So, here is what my idea is.
Dean will perform on stage at the EDGE event a song. He will have to dance and sing and act very crazy. He will sing a hilarious song, I'm thinking maybe 'Like a Virgin' by Madonna and do the dance moves to boot with it. IF we can raise the $5000. That would mean at this point about 400 of us donating $10; or 800 of us donating $5. Would this anticipation of something totally bizarre inspire anyone to reach the goal?
If we all know Dean, he would most likely add something RE or benefit on top of that of his choice, but I want some totally bizarre off the wall ideas. I can picture the above in my head, and I know it would be so hysterical. I'm cracking up just thinking of it. Sticking out tongue DEAN is up for doing something crazy you guys. Can you top my crazy idea? Dean would do something like this. Let's gather up our DG family and get the contest going so we can raise the $5K by the end of March! WE CAN DO IT!! C'mon, even Dean's employees would want to see something of this caliber. IT would be something noone would EVER forget for sure!
We want to see this contest go on every year! Would you pledge for a crazy outcome like this?

AND we give him the opportunity to bid AGAINST having to do it!
Say we raise that $5,000, and he/supporters raise $5,005 or something like that, then he doesn't have to do it.
If we raise more than he does, he dances.
The Edge Fund wins double, and Dean has a chance to keep his dignity.

Well, we will be calling some of the contestants tomorrow and then announce the winners on Friday. Know it was a very tough choice and we wanted to make sure all the judges opinions were taken into account. Remember, EVERYONE that entered is a winner for taking the action and putting your dreams, goals and actions on paper.

I agree with Rina 100%, it was amazing to read the essays and talk to the finalists to see what everyone is doing. Although the winners will be announced soon by Tammy, I think everyone who entered is a winner.

It was such a pleasure reading/listening to everyone progress, all the massive action being taken and how much everyone has grown!
Let me take a minute to share something with you guys. Last year I entered this contest. If not mistaken I came in third. (one short of the ticket). I did take it hard, very hard. Even though there was still time to get it done, I didn't get to the Edge last year. Even as much of a disappointment that it was to me, I said NEVER again! I will not miss another chance, I WILL be there next year. It was a turning point for me. Once I got over my pity party I had through April. Something snapped, In May I turned it ON! I went 'all-in', wide open! I had a ton more failures, alot of setback, obstacles and challenges to overcome. But you know what, I DIDN'T QUIT! I didn't give up! On Dec. 1st 2011, I gave my notice, on Friday December 16th I walked into my bosses office at 1:00 and said "It's been a pleasure, but your services are no longer needed!" EXACT WORDS! OMG, what a feeling! Whatever your goals and dreams are, you CAN have them!
This years Edge, you CAN still kick tail and get there, there is still time. But no matter what, DECIDE and be willing put in the work required to get you there next year!!!
So please, I encourage you for those that don't win, to let it motivate you, let it fuel you. It's only a decision, you have already within you what it takes! You WILL SUCCEED! We believe in you.....I BELIEVE IN YOU! COME ON......what are you waiting for? Go hard, go strong, go all in! YOU ARE CLOSER THAN YOU THINK!!

I want to tell you to EVERYONE that entered, you made our job EXTREMELY difficult. I came up with a system so there wasn't bias and we could disassociate ourselves more to narrow it down to make it fair. The competition here in the DG family is FIERCE!!!! We have some very impressive up and comers on this board and they are a force to be reckoned with!
I want to encourage all of you, because you are the future DG Superstars, no doubt about it! This was so difficult, I can't stress that enough. So many of you are deserving of going! But, we can only choose 2 because we did not reach $5K in donations. So, hold onto your seats while I announce the winners.
Our first task was to narrow down the essays to just the top 10. From there, we called the top 10 to get more of a personal connection with the contestants and see how they did with some questions we asked them. These interviews were VERY revealing to us, even so much so that we may do the contest a little differently next year if we do it again.
I say if because we have to see how many donations come in. If we can't get more donations, this opportunity may not be available next year. This is a contest run by the DG family, it is something WE put on, not Dean, his staff, or the coaches. So, I can't express just HOW extremely grateful we are to all the donators giving to this cause. I am still aiming to get at least 300 of the DG family to donate at least a small amount. Please see the link at the beginning of the main message in this thread for some ideas to increase the number of people donating. We have some pretty fun ideas to make it really fun to donate. I'm hoping it does the trick.

This isn't something that is clear-cut, black & white. You really have to dig deep and find the most deserving-est of the entrants.
I applaud all the judges AND the entrants too for stepping out of their comfort zones to do this.
