Goal setting

Goal setting

I have read many self-help, motivational and investment books over the past two decades and you can find many common elements in all of them. One is goal setting. Dean and others mention to set realistic goals, check your progress and readjust as necessary. In the past, I have set goals to buy 5 houses in a year, wholesale my first deal in 45 days, build my buyer's list, etc. For one reason or another (whether it was a lack of confidence or self worth), I would get distracted or discouraged and give up. Well, enough is enough.

When I was a kid, my mom always would tell me that people are going to form an opinion of you based upon the company that you keep. I have never hung with a bad crowd, but for some reason, I have surrounded myself with people who are content with the status quo. I'm not saying that it is a bad thing. However, I want more. I need to start making changes and associating with people who are more successful in their lives than I am (both personal and in business). Starting over, one of my first goals is going to be a unique one. I see that in our profiles there are "points" assigned for our contributions. My goal is to reach 500 "points" by the end of the year. Now you may say that's a silly goal and how is that going to change your financial situation. My response to that is, If I am accumulating points on this website, I am an active participant within the community. As an active member here, I will be keeping company with a crowd that shares my goals and interests. By meeting and keeping connected with people more successful than me, I will raise my own bar and more likely stay on track towards my ultimate goals which I will set, share and reach later. Thanks to those who read this and I look forward to meeting you all soon. 169 down, 331 to go.

What are some unique goals that you can think of to set for yourself?

Not a silly goal

Great Idea to make a goal on accumulating points to keep yourself active on the site. I did the same thing but Ia little different. I told myself that I want to make to the top ten people who has the most points in a week from posting on this site and so far Ive been doing good with it. Like you said it keeps me active on networking with like minded people and I get more motivated every time I read a post on other DGers doing deals.

Thank you

Thanks for the support Reynold. Between the holiday and having my family visiting for a few weeks, I got off track (which I know will happen from time to time). I am happy to be back and 'networking'. I look forward to meeting many more successful investors within the community such as yourself in the days, weeks and months to come.

You're on the right track. Yes, just keep coming back to this site...it will keep you motivated. If it weren't for me being on this site all the time, I would have never completed my first deal. Networking with other investors on this site is the key. Can't say that enough. Smiling

easy goal

I wish you luck on your goals. I started by writing them down and putting them up in the bathroom. You see them at a minimum twice per day. It works..

A

It is great to hear you are moving forward !! Most give up and never return. You have DECIDED to persist on and re gather your earlier experience. You have reached back inside and pulled out what you always had. I admire your tenacity to write down and nail your dreams but most of all take action Dailey with them !! PUSH on and ride that momentum to higher and higher levels. Remember these Dailey actions COMPOUND into amazing things in very short time !! Good luck and excited to see where you propell yourself !!

I am quite impressed with your post. That is the post of a person who will be successful.

You have a smart Momma! Follow her advice.

Just a few years ago, I was living from paycheck to paycheck (often barely making it to the next one). I discovered Dean and this site. (you see by the joined date how fast it can happen) I developed some very strong relationships here that kept me going. The only other poster on this site that has more points than I do, is Joe Jurek. So I agree that by getting committed to be involved works.

In the short time since I started here, I now live in a condo on the beach and just returned from a three week vacation cruising from Greece to Egypt, Israel, Turkey, Corsica and Italy! Two years ago, I spent five weeks touring Italy. I have signed up to sail for three weeks around South America and spend several days sailing through Antarctica next year. I am able to fly to Los Angeles, which is on the opposite coast from where I live, at least every three months, sometimes more often, to visit my children. When not traveling for pleasure, I am traveling all over the US and Canada teaching others how to change their lives by investing in RE the way I do.

I tell you this to just reiterate what you hear on here! DREAMS DO COME TRUE!!! Just BELIEVE and work your a$$ off! Just do exactly what Dean tells you to do!

Wishing you blessings!

Karen

Karen and Jay

It may sound corny, but I got goosebumps reading your replies.

Jay: Without going into my whole story here, I will say that I thought I was the king of the world between '02-'06. I went from bartender to real estate investor managing a dozen properties that I owned and partnered on another 3. From '06-'11 I lost almost everything until '12 when I finally crumbled and filed for bankruptcy. In the spring of this year I am happy to say that my bankruptcy was discharged and I was able to save 2 of my rental properties. Now that my pity party is over, I have picked myself up, dusted myself off and am hitting the books again. I'm back behind the bar slinging drinks for a living, but I know that since I did it once, I can do it again. So yes, I'm back! I think it was Dale Carnegie who said "Knowledge isn't power until it is applied." Time to get back to the work I know will better my future.

Karen: One of my passions is traveling. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to do much in the past several years, but it is a big motivator. I know how quickly smart real estate investing can change your life. As I mentioned, I experienced it first hand. Now that I am starting over and facing different challenges, I am looking to the experience and success of the DG community to motivate me and guide me to be successful because and despite my past experiences. When I get back on top, I cant wait to be able to return the favor and teach others to do the same.

Thanks again to everyone for your replies, input, motivation and encouragement.
