My name is Lisa and I'm a 52 (EDIT: 53 now as of 3-30!!!) (54 now 
!!!!!!) year old single mother, career student, and Social Security Disability recipient. I am a cancer survivor (16 years now) and have been plagued with depression for as long as I can remember.
Last year, after not going to school or working since 1998, I decided to jump back into college. I was sick and tired of being sick and tired all the time, and broke. My income had been cut by 1/3 in January of 2009. Then, I just lost my housing assistance which effectively cut my income by 1/3 once again in August of this year. I knew that I could get some money if I went to school, grants and scholarships (I hoped). But, even with the grants and such, this time I had to take out student loans. I figured I could pay them off when I got a really good job in the Technology field.
Well, I started at the University of Phoenix full time in June of last year (2009). I got all A's but I didn't learn much. It's a long story but suffice it to say that I decided not to finish which means I have this huge looming student loan that I have to start paying on soon.
Anyway, with that out of the way, I'll tell you what I'm doing now. Last week sometime I was up in the middle of the night because I couldn't sleep (as usual). I turned on the tv and I sat and watched as Dean got into his car and record himself on his way home. He was on about his new book, "Profit From Real Estate Right Now!", and I sat and watched the whole thing thinking this was something I really would like to do. I particularly liked the part about not having to have good credit, or money for a down payment.
I had thought about RE in the past, but just didn't think I was cut out for it. I decided to order the book and was also able to get "Be A Real Estate Millionaire" for only shipping and processing. When my order came, there was a DVD included about the Success Academy.
To make a long story short, the first thing I did was enroll in the Success Academy and I am on my first lesson now. I am shooting for my first deal in 30 days! So, wish me luck and say a prayer for me (if you do that) so that I can make this come true. Thanks to everyone here, and to the whole DG team.

But, of course, Dean has told us that he is committed to keeping this (free) site going and recently put in some upgrades that I believe will give us all a better experience here. But I do want to correct a part of your comment. Free is great (Thanks, Dean), so Dean wins, you win, I win, we all win.
Just the fact that you are here is great. Keep us posted on how you are and what you are up to. If I can be so bold as to speak for the DG family, we love hearing from you. It seems like your sleeping patterns are less out of wack than before if you are attending a REI group locally on a weekly basis. I hope that works out well with networking and building relationships, etc.

I earned my halo!! (or, is it a gold ring?) Anyway, yippee haha.
So, I didn't do much today, it's really hot here in AZ and my air conditioner broke in my house again :/. I just had it replaced about four years ago, but I can't find the papers for it. At any rate, I'm sure the warranty is on the last leg if there's anything left at all, so wish me luck on this one! I'm really trying not to be down about this. My mom has a portable swamp cooler that she's letting me use, so I have that to be thankful for, right??? Sigh. Tomorrow is Thursday and I am going to my REI club! No excuses!!

"Did she make it...?", you ask? Why, yes, yes she did! I made it to my rei meeting on Thursday night and I'm glad I did. Besides making the commitment to do so, I signed up for a very cool software program that I will get for 30 days free. If I hadn't have gone, I wouldn't have gotten 30 days free, so I'm pretty stoked. After that, it's only a third of the normal cost for three months should I continue with it. It looks very promising as a deal finder! Who doesn't need help with that? Ok, maybe some of you don't, but I do, at least right now. I hadn't been to my meeting in six months!!
I didn't realize it had been that long...time flies.
Time for some more sleep. I really did try to go to sleep at a decent hour, and I have been lately. But, I have (another) rescue kitty here that woke me up and wouldn't let me get back to sleep. Honest, true story.

What ever challenges you are facing, treat them as small bumps in the road, and maintain your focus.
I know you can do it.
I have not done any deals either, but I am keeping my focus intact, I have started taking action, Got my business cards, attending Club meetings, asking questions at the meeting, attending workshops, contacting RE agents , looking at house , putting offers, putting ads on craiglist, got hold of a title company, attorney and building buyers list etc.
I have one property under attorney review, if all goes well I will make about $8000/-, but there is a chance I will lose $700/- but it is OK, I am learning and I am moving forward.
I am doing this part time.
So go out there and make it happen. Believe in your self and I wish you strength and endurance to make it happen. The Only reason I have not wished you luck is because if you work hard with all sincerity you are bound to succeed.

As Dean said in one of his weekly wisdoms God's delays are not God's denial, I believe that it may take longer for you because once you get comfortable and knowledgeable about the process your investing will sky rocket faster then you have imagined !

Bimal, thank you for your words of encouragement! I wish you well in your endeavors, you will make it! I've been reading the posts in your journal on here and you certainly have been trying very hard. I haven't read them all (yet!) so I don't know just what stage you are in, but just don't give up and it will happen! I am saying a prayer for you right now that you will get this deal closed and not lose anything on it! I will be heading over to your journal in a little while to finish reading it. I'm curious as to why you'd lose any money, unless your earnest money is non-refundable, or hmm.. maybe the atty's fees and an appraisal? At any rate, God bless you and take care and thanks again

Today, I was supposed to take my present rescue kitty to PetSmart in hopes that someone nice will adopt her, but we didn't make it. She kept me up again during the night so I didn't get much sleep(!!). I have to stop rescuing kitties, I know! And, I'm severely allergic to them! This particular cat found her way in my son's backyard a couple of years ago and he and my daughter-in-law (I call her dil, she calls me mil lol) just started feeding her and she never left. They own a house in Tempe (AZ) and he just recently had to move to Los Angeles, while dil just got her dream job in CT. So, guess who was left with the task of getting their house ready to rent?? And guess where kitty went?
That's what I've been doing for the past month. I'm sure learning how it would be if I were to be a rehabber or a property manager. No thanks, I want to work smart, not hard. But, it was valuable experience and it showed me what I DON'T want to do.

Wow I have snippets of sleep myself (working at nights gives me 4 great hours of sleep at best )
So I can only imagine and that is interesting rescuing even if allergic
You could always come on DG when you can't sleep
