MIKE,thank you for responding to my post for help.The past company was bought out years ago.If i remember correctly my 401k was being held by a company in california.We all know Joe jurek on here(dg.com)he's a cpa,do you think he could shine any light on this subject? I get my statements quarterly from my previous employer's 401(k).
What was the name of the company that was bought out? How many "years" was "years ago"?

You can work with a company called property direct that dean endorses that can help you locate your 401k and then they will work with you to convert it to a self directed IRA. If you want there info send me a personal message and I will get you connected.
