you may have to experiment w/ a little of both. i believe ill probably start with hand written becasuse it is cheaper to buy blanks. you may also buy thick poster board from walmart easier quicker.
Handwritten signs are proven to work better. One of Dean's books explains a little bit better, but from what I remember:
When you're driving down the road and you look at a sign and see that its handwritten than you know for sure that an ACTUAL human being made the sign and made the effort of putting it out there.
Computer printed signs have more of a farther connection to it, kind of makes you think if they have your good means in mind.
Hah! Raymond, ironically I have a sign company. It's 23 yrs old so we've gone from hand painted signs to vinyl lettered signs to computer generated signs. I think the reason the hand written signs work so well (proven by Dean and Matt) is because, like Gabriel said, that the CAD signs seem "business like". The homemade look stands out as different and get attention.
So yep-- in my shop the only advantage we have is that we have a light table. So we get a giant sharpie and write them exactly the way DG tells us to on yellow corroplast once, then we trace the others on blanks over the light table.
Don't forget to tell us how it works!
I tried 5 different locations (near Wal Marts/ Mc D's) before we found the winning (60 calls a week) spot!
PS Shhhhh... I don't take mine down.

i have put atleast 30 handwritten signs and they work great! use yellow signs with black writting it stands out more. i would also buy some printed ones too not many though just to see if you get a good conversion rate in your area? you never know people might respond to them more than to the handwritten ones.
Always "track and measure" that way you know whats woking and in what locations you get the most calls from.
Hope this helped.

I received my signs yesterday from www.signoutfitter.com . I was suppose to get them on Saturday only, but came 2 days early ( good job guys!), what gives me a chance to take advantage of the Easter traffic. I am writing them now, and will put my kids in the car in the evening, and have a family fun putting sign in the busy intersections and Walmart exit.
I try to put myself in the shoes of the party I'm trying to communicate with. So in this case, if you're looking to buy a house, would you want to feel like you're dealing with a private individual or a big company? Handwritten it is.
If you don't take yours down yourself, the ones on commercial property (walmart, mcdonalds, etc) will be removed by their grounds crew. This could be once a week or more depending how their contract with them is set up. They usually don't work on the weekend but do work during the week. Your best bet is after 5pm on Friday (as noted in dean's books).
My first batch was done on a Saturday morning around 10am and I still got crazy results.
Easter week would probably be one of the best weeks to have your signs up as that's when the kids are out of school and relatives are in-town. A lot of people driving around.
Don't forget churches(Easter) & movie theaters!!
Good Luck!

Handwritten works better, at least where I live. You can try both, but I highly recommend handwritten.
Pre-printed ones seem more like a corporation etc, and handwritten is like a local person. At least thats how I feel about it.
