Since this forum mostly focuses on commitment and effort, I'm trying to figure out the difference between the choices we make and the ultimate fate we end up with.
For instance, if only 5 positions are available and 50 people apply the same exact technique to reach that position, how is it that only 5 are rewarded for their efforts? Who determines the failure of the other 45?
We all want to succeed in RE, but for some reason some are successful and yet others are struggling to get their first deal. Could it be that some are just destined to succeed? Can it ever be that all can succeed? After all, if there are only 5 positions available and 50 people apply the same technique to succeed, 45 must lose one way or the other.
There must be more to the conventional wishful thinking when it comes to success. Destiny and fate must be taken into account. What else can explain the obvious discrimination against two competing equals?
P.S. - Everything else is immaterial, irrelevant, and unnecessary.
Paul,
I truly believe that we make our destiny and we have choices that will cause different results.
I don't think that there are only 5 positions... maybe in one area, but then it's up to the person to make a choice to look for a position in another area, and hence, change his/her destiny.
If this person decides instead to stay in that same area where the 5 positions area already taken, then by making that choice, this person will also have an effect on his/her destiny. Same person, making different choices, and consequently, totally different destinies.
I know it's difficult to make deals in Cali; for me, almost impossible (at least for the timebeing), therefore I invest out of state...

I also don't believe their are 5 positions, you go look somewhere else. We make our destiny.

Hey Paul,
I suggest that you go to www.youtube.com and listen to some of Jim Rohn's stuff. It is awesome.

It's a proven fact that only 3-5% of all people persist and overcome failure. Of the 45 that don't get 'the position' how many are going to continue to go on and pursue what they want, need and desire DESPITE the failure? THAT'S the difference. One has to put in place a mindset that failure is part of the journey to success. No one can go on and feel defeated and stay defeated if they want to go forth to the success.
It is for this reason I have created the mindset minute thread. When I was going through repeated let downs and failures, I only had THIS site as my support. There was no IE. I don't have cheerleaders pushing me. I have naysayers who repeatedly tell me I CAN'T. In that thread I resurrect many of the threads that got me through 'the positions' I didn't get.
Come and check it out at http://www.deangraziosi.com/real-estate-forums/investing-journals/127260....
Nothing I do will end in failure because I CHOOSE my destiny! I only succeed because I pick myself up after my 'failures'. (Learning experiences). Until you have that mindset engraved in your soul, you'll believe there really are only 5 positions. Perception is your reality.

It was once said, “religion is designed to comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comfortable.”
I understand the whole mindset thing and going to look somewhere else, but the crux of my questions remains the same....Who and why determines the success of one and the failure of the other when two competing equals want the same thing?
The 5 to 50 is only an analogy. The reality remains that some must fail in order for the others to succeed. Therefore, fate must be taken in account, otherwise how is it that with equal qualities some still do not reach their goals.
Perhaps this reality must not be overlooked. The failure of one should not be automatically dismissed as them not doing the right thing. Some luck and fate also must have a place in the equation.
P.S. - Everything else is immaterial, irrelevant, and unnecessary.
WHO determines the success of one? Themselves.
WHY is that success determined? By the mindset and ability to get up and persist despite everyone being against one, despite things not working out, despite failed deals, failed teams, failed attempts, despite lost time and effort- (which is actually not lost at all; it was used to learn some very valuable lessons) By having a WHY that overpowers circumstances. (FIND YOUR WHY HERE: http://www.deangraziosi.com/emd/videm/7levels)
We are taught and brought up to believe all there is is to goto school, get an education, learn to work for other's and then retire. There's SO much more that isn't taught.
Noone else has to fail to succeed but yourself. And what one does with that failure is what determines the outcome. You create your own fate by your actions or inactions; by determining whether something works or doesn't work after failing at it once, twice, hundreds of times. Some will not get up that 101st time; they wear out, they die to the dream, they don't hold on to their WHY and focus and lock everything else out to achieve their goal and lose sight of their WHY.
Your WHY is your determining factor. Jen Gray said it so well at the Edge event. She put a picture of her son in front of her. She writes on it IS HE WORTH IT? That's her WHY! She never loses sight of that why. It keeps her moving on and on despite every obstacle, naysayer and failure that she comes across. She overcomes it because her WHY is strong enough.
Matt Larson, stuck in a dead end machine shop worker job. Does he have something others don't have? YES! He has a WHY that weighs on his brain, his soul, his mind over anything and everything else that would stop him. He is DETERMINED not to have a destiny of working at a machine shop for the rest of his life. His why is greater than that little voice inside that tells him to quit and its not worth it.
It isn't about luck. It isn't about fate. Its about the LUCK and FATE that one CREATES for themselves...
I could not agree more. We all know that a failure puts us one step closer to success. The difference between a successful REI and a non successful REI is determination, persistence, entrepreneurship and HARD WORK (a little common sense helps!). In business you make your own luck and fate. Two equals will not necessarily succeed at the same time. 97% can't hang. Why are we talking about this? Lets go make some offers!

although it may appear so on the surface. Same degree perhaps, but determination is different. Some may appear to work, but only be spinning their wheels. That is not to say that at times we don't maybe also spin our wheels, but we figure that out and move on to more constructive methods to achieve!

"Who determines the failure of the other 45?"
You do. It's called building rapport, connecting with people, selling yourself...call it what you will. It's a gift for some people, others have to work at it. People do business with people they like. People can put out the same number of bandit signs, run the same number of craig's list ads, mail out the same post card to the same list. The intangible is how you deal with and relate to people. If you are difficult to deal with, all other things being equal, you won't enjoy the success others do. The most qualified person doesn't always get the job or the best looking guy doesn't always take the beauty queen to the prom. Unfortunately, it's not as simple as "Do this...get money".
