I just got back from driving to a Small town in New Mexico and purchased a plane, removed the wings, tied it all to my trailer and brought it back to California.
It was an expensive purchase but I paid cash. I gave him a $500 deposit 6 months ago and finally it all came together, got a camper shell for my truck, got a nice flat bed trailer, rented a hanger at the local country airport, I didn't have any more excuses not to go get it. So anyway.
I returned home a few days ago and today I got an email from John the 78 year old seller saying his church friends were telling him I was probably a drug dealer cuz I'm from Calif and paid in cash and wud be using the plane to smuggle drugs in from Mexico haha. This little town in NM has a population of 430 and I must of been the hot topic.
He said he defended me vigorously telling them I was a real nice guy but he cudnt convince them.
Here is my reply email to John.
John, Haha, that's funny. My friends also think I'm doing something illegal to be making all this money, especially since I was just a hard working carpenter for over 30 years making squat until the economy went belly up.
But, fortunately for me I seen a late night commercial telling how you cud make money in Real Estate with no money and no credit. I spent $25 on a book.
In fact my last few deals I made $28,000 friking dollars. I find these old junk houses, get them on contract and flip them to rehab investors, We go thru a Title company and escrow so its all documented and very legal.
The really great thing about my life is, I found something much better than alcohol or drugs, and that's the love I get from my young kids and beautiful young wife.. She's 40 and Im 64 yrs old.
We have 5 acres on a beautiful Island called Bohol, part of the Philippines. Her and the kids live there and I go there 4-6 months every year.
We have been completely rehabbing and rebuilding our home there since it suffered some serious damage in a earthquake.
Yep John, I think I must be the luckiest guy on the planet, and the crazy thing is, I'm getting better at my new profession and better times and more prosperity is coming.
And, I luv telling my story and helping others get into Real Estate, in fact I paid 3 helpers that I recruited in the last few months $25,000 that found some of these deals for me.
And, I know it all sounds like BS, so I photograph all my checks for proof. And guess what, I still don't even believe it, how cud this chewed up old exconstruction worker be making this kind of money and be so blessed. Haha, but I know why, it's because I educated myself, took a chance along with the risk, took action and I'm making it happen.
I enclosed a photo of me and my family and just a few of the many checks I've been getting.

I hope this helps the old guy, and he believes me. But, I got better things to do, like flip some more houses.
Let's make some MONEY

Wow Awesome testimony Rando1 way to go, need to get going myself on this, takecare.

Seeing as it was from a small community like that, it's understandable (to a point) that they may think that considering how society and media portray drug dealers in that way. However, we know the truth is, you made it happen through REI and knowing how to gain leverage on deals to where you sell or assign them to other buyers/investors.
Nice work!

THis is a single place plane called a Rans S-14, you can google it to see what it looks like.
Cruises at about 80 or you can cut back on the throttle, give it 15 degrees of flaps and cruise around at 40 MPH
These are just for flying around the pea patch in calm weather and sight seeing and having fun.
Flying 100 miles in this thing would be an ordeal, fighting thermal updrafts and winds.

Aristotle put it like this “The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet.”
P.S. - Everything else is immaterial, irrelevant, and unnecessary.
This just goes to show you that the majority of people do not know what they are capable of doing and achieving and when they see someone else making it big they think the worst. People have to see it to believe it and even then the majority still won't believe it.
Your going to love that plane, very predictable, safe and Rans has been around for awhile so parts are easy to get. With what you've said it sounds like you have a 503 and probable 9-12 fuel, thermals only on landing are a concern and wind is just fuel burn change to higher altitude and yes for longer flights throttle back, 200 miles at 50 is doable because you have 3-4 hr flight time depending on fuel tank size.
That plane I believe has a stall of around 36-38 so 45 would be safer, I have a Challenger single 447 with a little more wingspan and stalls around the same and I stalled at 5ft at 40-41 and it was a hard landing bent my landing gear so I stay above what manufacture specs.
I know this isn't REI but when you start making money this is what happens, I think this should motivate people to want to succeed and go after what dreams they have...
Rando if you wanna talk planes and REI give me a shout.
Aaron
Hey Aaron, wow I luv the Challenger, I have admired that plane for years. It's a sweet design, very similar to my Rans. I've seen a few for sale and the price was similar to my S-14 and I cud have easily went that direction.
This plane I just purchased has the Rotax 582, 64 frikin horse power with Oil injection and electric start, gear drive with a 3 blade composite prop. Even has hydraulic disc brakes. It's got full instrumentation. Even exhaust gas temps.
This plane has 2 5 gal wing tanks. Empty weight is about 500 pounds, the ballistic chute and full enclosure def add some weight.
My Quicksilver MXL was really fun, I loved flying with the open cockpit, I wonder how I will like a full enclosure?
I got me a Go Pro 4 camera with all the accessories. I been fixing up my hanger, I'm gonna need help putting the wings back on and hooking everything back up. But man, it's been frikin hot in central cal, 108 degrees.
I want to see photos of that challenger and hear more about it.
Rando
Rando
You got it, I have pics and vid from my Go Pro 4, that thing takes amazing vids.
Funny you had a Quick MXL, my first plane was an 83 MX with pod and 3 axis and brakes, came in at 250 perfect for part 103, gotta luv wire its strong and less drag.
I also have a 2013 Quick 2S 582 blue head composite full open and luv to see down between the knees, there's nothing like open cockpit flying.
I do understand the hanger prob, I picked up 20A and building a 20x40 hanger with cabin on one side and tractor shed on other but out here we have had so much rain. Crazy weather...
I will PM you with my number.
Aaron

That most of the time ends the looks..lol The more our country changes the more I want to retire in asia somewhere. I know what you are building up for there.....I get it..NOW GO GET SOME...

Rando
Congratulations on for your plane!!!!
When the going gets tough, the tough gets going.
I was flying around in my Rans-S14 yesterday. I was really pushing to just to see what it was capable of. I was surprised about so many things with this baby. Just when I was beginning to feel really good about my Rans, my wife woke me up and said it's time to get ready for church. I hope I could get another ride on the Rans so
