Several new investors have inquired to me about characteristics that may assist them with their real estate investing. I believe some of the key principles in real estate investing would include, but not be limited to, the following items:
- "Treat people better that you want to be treated".
This is so critical because as I get a little older I see that customer service in some retail stores are slipping a little. As stores try to save money, the customer service is declining. I remember years ago when you shopped at a store like Sears, Roebuck and Company or Macy's, how each department had customer service agents available to answer any of your questions. Thus, always remember when dealing with people, try to always treat people better than you want to be treated. This may brighten someone else's day which has a ripple effect on countless others.
- "Actions speak louder than words"
The quote "actions speak louder than words" is so true to life and real estate investing. I read this quote today and it really made me think a little deeper today. As we start our real estate investing this is one quote that we can take to heart for several areas.
- "Develope a good reputation and do what you say your going to do"
Once we determine that we are "Real Estate Investors", we have to act and believe we are real estate investors. How do we conduct our business with others? A key point to remember is to always do what you say your going to do and develope a good reputation as a real estate investor. This will go along way with dealing with people if they know you are honest, ethical and you do what you say your going to do. If possible always try to exceed a person's expectations.
This can be as simple as always being on time when scheduling appointments. It is very important to respect other's time because so often in life people are always pressed for time especially in this ever changing technology age we currently live in today.
Some of these keys or principles can help you a great deal with real estate investing and in life. They do not cost anything to acquire but can be priceless for your growth as an investor and a business person. Good luck with real estate investing! You can do it! Believe and Achieve! - Joe

this is such a great site. we can all learn from eachother. when i had my tool business in colo. i always tried to 'underpromis' and 'over deliver'. this made me stand out with my customers and made the other tool dealers wonder.
Thanks Joe
One little example: I've made a practice/habit of tipping workers/contractors/yardboys, etc. I always love the expressions on their faces when they show up, do a job expecting their fee and get handed an extra $10,$20,$100, etc. more than they expected. I usually give it cash(feels so good in your hand you know!)accompanied with somelike like, "hey man, thanks for the work and I'd like to buy you a beer. . . or a cup of coffee.....or a little gasoline".
Way more often than not, the person is surprized and clearly not expecting the little extra consideration.
It's professional, courteous and shows generosity; all aspects of the light in which I want to be seen as a full-time, serious real estate investor.
thanks.

Thanks for the additional comments and insight. That is a great comment to underpromise and over deliver, that is always a way to exceed your customer's expectations. Thanks for sharing. Good luck with real estate investing and finding that next deal. Believe and Achieve! - Joe

Thanks for sharing the comments and another great tip for all of us to use. So often then not if we establish good relationship with contractors this will benefit us many times over. How often do you see people working hard on a hot day and no one even offers them a cold drink. The little extras that you do for people are often appreciated and I believe you have a great point here. Whether it is a cold drink, a lunch or a few dollars for gas, that can make a huge difference with workers and they will not forget it. Thanks again for sharing the insight. Continued success in all you do. Believe and Achieve! - Joe

Thanks for another great tip. It is true that when you talk to people on the phone make sure they can imagine the smile as you talk to them. Often, if you are pleasant it will go along way and get you the contact person or the information you need. If you can use the person's name and thank them at the end, it also can make them feel good about assisting you. Thanks again for the insight and I believe this is another great point to put into practice. Continued success on all your deals. Believe and Achieve! - Joe
