What are some tips on spotting major defects in a home?

The one challenge I am seeing, for me, is when I offer on some houses and one gets accepted, then I go see the house and it's in really bad shape, or it looks really bad. How do I tell if there is something seriously wrong with the structure of the house or otherwise that would make the deal a bad deal? I know there have been suggestions to bring in a contractor and such, so what are some pointers on how to find that perfect contractor or rehab team? Is this covered in any of the RBBP material?
