We should celebrate our victories and learn from our mistakes

In business and in life, we should celebrate our victories and learn from our mistakes. Mistakes are never failure unless we quit.

Mistakes can be the fertilizer for future success, and the experience can create building blocks for greatness. All mistakes are not created equal. There are mistakes that involve effort and then there are mistakes that involve apathy.

Effort is the one element that has to exist in all success formulas. Nothing worthwhile ever happens without our own best efforts. Sometimes, these efforts involve us making an error or mistake.

These mistakes can be temporarily painful and costly, but they need not be fatal. As long as the attitude is good and the effort is consistent, we have the potential to succeed.

The most dangerous type of mistake is a mistake of apathy. Doing the wrong thing can sometimes create a bad result, but doing nothing is always a recipe for failure. I would rather strike out while swinging for the fences than be called out by the umpire while resting the bat harmlessly on my shoulder.

All successful people are part of a team. Your team may include friends, family, colleagues, clients, and anyone who is a part of your success. From time to time, members of our team will have a temporary failure.

If you have structured your organization properly, these failures are never fatal. When it becomes obvious that a mistake has been made, the first step is to simply stop and observe. If you want to get out of a hole in which you find yourself, the first step is to stop digging.

Too often, when a mistake has been made, we have a knee jerk reaction trying to compensate for the situation. This often leads to further disaster.

Many times in a football game, you will see a quarterback drop back, preparing to throw a pass. If his protection breaks down, it is obvious that one of his blockers has made a mistake.

Generally, the best course of action for the quarterback, if he is unable to elude the defender, is simply to hold on to the ball and take a small loss and prepare for the next play.

Many times, if the quarterback tries to overcome the breakdown in his team’s protection all by himself, there is even a bigger loss or a fumble which can be disastrous.

Once you have determined a mistake has been made and you have pinpointed the problem, you must assess whether it is a mistake of effort or apathy.

If it is a mistake of effort, you simply need to adjust the course or direction slightly; but if it is a mistake of apathy, you have to get that team member fully engaged as quickly as possible or remove them from the team before the apathy becomes epidemic.

As you go through your day today, remember that trying and failing is a temporary condition, but not trying is permanent.
Two Tips For Creating A Wealthy Mindset By Les Brown
Posted August 27, 2010 0 Comments and 0 Reactions In life, attitude is everything. We’ve all been told that our attitude determines our altitude. Most people have much more control over their own happiness and success than they dare to realize.

The fact is, we all have control over our own minds, and in turn, our feelings. It is when we exercise that control that we are able to fully experience our greatness.

Here are two strategies to protect your mind from negativity and foster a winning attitude towards creating prosperity in your life.

Tip #1 Make a decision to trust your instincts!

As you journey toward success, you will connect with people who will open up doors of knowledge and opportunity for you. Be open-minded and grateful for these experiences, but always trust your gut.

Don’t allow yourself to bend to the will of someone else if it goes against your instincts. We are all given one of the most precious gifts of all: intuition. You must develop the courage to use your gut level intuition.

Tip #2 Don’t Seek Out Approval From Others!

Sometimes it’s best to resist the urge to share your excitement about what you are doing. People may not react the way you would hope, and you may feel deflated.

Disappointing reactions from people can undercut your enthusiasm.

Work diligently to build up your self-confidence and self-esteem and simply refuse to have your feelings hurt. If necessary, keep your positive energy inside, where it does the most good.

Instead of gushing about yourself, show genuine interest in the lives of others, with confidence that you are on the right path for you.

Have you ever looked back on an event in your life and thought: “Why did I let that person make me doubt myself?” Learn from it, and correct it. Keep a safe distance from people in your life who don’t believe in you.

Work towards strengthening yourself emotionally and remember that someone’s opinion of you doesn’t have to be your reality.

Embrace your own mind; your taste, your style, your passions. When the way you feel about yourself is unaffected by the way others feel about you, a power shift occurs. Your confidence will radiate and those around you will feel it. You become unstoppable.

Let your victories and failures be on your own terms. Learn and grow from both, and above all, enjoy the ride.

In Pursuit of Greatness,

The Desperation Solution by Jim Stovall
Posted August 20, 2010 0 Comments and 0 Reactions You have probably heard it said that necessity is the mother of invention. If necessity is its mother, desperation must certainly have been its father. Creative people often come up with breakthrough solutions only when they’re forced to.

Professors from the University of Chicago and Harvard determined that there is direct correlation between when unemployment runs out and when people get a job. While desperation may be a great motivator, it’s not always the most productive way to perform with excellence. I believe there is a win/win solution here as you and I—as mature, functioning people—can set our own deadlines.

Abraham Lincoln often described maturity as the ability to perform vigorously long before the urgency is at hand. Most of us during our high school or college years allowed the deadline for the term paper or the date for the final exam to creep up on us before we were fully prepared. Successful people overcome this in their professional lives as they set their own deadlines and do not let outside forces or other people control their sense of urgency or force them into desperation.

Invariably, if you and I wait until the last minute to undertake some creative or critical task, we will perform less than our best, or a crisis will arise that requires us to divert our attention. Even if you dodge the bullet and don’t get burned by waiting ’till the eleventh hour, sooner or later this practice will catch up with you. You can run a red light and possibly avoid an accident and even escape without a traffic ticket, but if you do this long enough, you will suffer serious consequences.

There are two diverse time management techniques that should control your allocation of effort and energy. First, never make a decision until you have to; and second, once you’re committed to a project, do it now.

As a professional speaker, I am often asked by event promoters or meeting planners if I am available to speak at their convention or annual event at some date in the distant future. Our practice is to first check the date and hold it if it is available but, also, to inquire as to when they need to finalize a decision. Many times, we find that if promoters or meeting planners don’t need my commitment for several months, the flexibility of waiting for a final decision can open the door for other opportunities.

On the other hand, once I have committed to write a book, draft a screen play, or undertake some other extended creative process, I understand the time to get started is now. Invariably, if I wait until the last minute, other opportunities may present themselves, but I will be unable to take advantage of them if I haven’t done what I should when I should.

You and I cannot control other people, market conditions, or outside forces, but we can control our own decisions, focus, effort, and energy. If you assume there are always more great opportunities coming along around the next corner, you will keep your mind open and your calendar clear so you can take advantage of them.

As you go through your day today, remember that being in the right place at the right time is not a matter of luck. It’s a decision to stay out of the wrong place at the wrong time.

Today’s the day!

Key Point: Don’t wait until the last minute to do something. More often than not, if you wait until the last minute to complete some critical task — especially if it’s anything beyond the more mundane one — you’ll end up doing less than your absolute best. Certainly, you may get it done, but you want to be seen as the person who “goes above and beyond — just good enough”. And that will require a bit of forethought and going beyond last minute actions.

The time required to plan ahead, and act accordingly you will find far off sets any inconvenience you may experience — especially when you consider the rewards doing so can yield you. Be a person that is known for “going above and beyond” what’s expected and you’ll begin to attract more of the opportunities that life affords those who give nothing less than their best to the task at hand.

Success Tips: Adversity Gives You Strength By John Boe
Posted August 18, 2010 0 Comments and 0 Reactions How can you stay self-motivated and productive in the midst of turbulent times and a sluggish economy?

How do you persevere as a salesperson when times are tough and customers seem to be holding on to every penny in fear of economic uncertainty?

Every challenge, setback and personal difficulty you encounter in life also brings with it the seed of equivalent or greater benefit!

The key to overcoming adversity is to avoid the temptation of panic and instead, focus on finding the greater benefit. Adversity will never leave you where it found you; it will either strengthen your character or weaken your resolve.

During the early years of WW II Nazi submarines, operating in wolf packs, roamed the frigid waters of the North Atlantic with impunity sinking an alarming number of British military and merchant ships. Hitler was confident that his U-boats could blockade England and eventually starve the British people into submission.

In the summer of 1940, while the Battle of Britain was being played out over London, the Germans unmercifully sank over 300 British military and merchant ships.

Prime Minister Winston Churchill, fearing the negative impact these devastating losses might have on the nation’s morale, ordered the information withheld from the public.

In an effort to reduce the appalling number of casualties lost at sea, Churchill instructed the British Royal Navy to begin a study to determine what, if anything, could be done to save more lives during sea rescue.

While interviewing the survivors an interesting discovery was made. To their complete astonishment, the researchers noted that the survival rate for the younger, presumably more physically fit sailors was remarkably lower when compared to their older shipmates.

The study concluded that the older sailors had a significantly higher survival rate due to the fact that they had overcome more adversity and therefore, had developed greater confidence in being rescued than the younger, less experienced sailors.

The head of the research project, Kurt Hahn, was so moved by this discovery that he created the Outward Bound program. Hahn designed the Outward Bound program, utilizing a series of progressively rugged challenges, to mentally and physically prepare young British sailors to cope with the adversity of naval combat. Today, the Outward Bound program works with troubled youth to help them develop greater confidence and self-image.

I find it interesting that people faced with similar adversity often experience remarkably different outcomes. Some people become weakened, some become hardened and some become stronger. If you place a carrot, an egg and a coffee bean into a pot of boiling water, each reacts in a completely different manner to their conditions.

The carrot goes into the boiling water firm and comes out soft; the egg goes in fragile and comes out hardened; while the coffee bean turns the hot water into coffee by releasing its flavor and aroma!

Selling in these challenging times demands determination and personal fortitude. Having the will to persevere when times are tough is a characteristic commonly found among self-made millionaires. Are you a quitter? The last time you failed, did you stop trying because you failed or did you fail because you stopped trying?

Thomas Edison documented 10,000 failed attempts to develop the electric light bulb. A reporter asked the great inventor how it felt to have failed 10,000 times trying to invent the light bulb. Edison responded, “Young man, I didn’t fail 10,000 times trying to invent the light bulb, I simply documented 10,000 ways that it wouldn’t work.” Imagine how different our world would be today if Edison had been a quitter.

You must expect to encounter detours, roadblocks and potholes of adversity along the road of life. The next time you are faced with adversity, learn from it and know that you are becoming a much stronger person because of it!

A Philosophy To Live By – By Zig Ziglar
Posted August 17, 2010 0 Comments and 1 Reaction Wisdom goes back a long way and comes in the form of examples, illustrations, stories, cliches, parables, etc. One of the oldest bits of philosophy says that “for want of a nail a shoe was lost, for want of a shoe a horse was lost, for want of a horse a rider was lost, for want of a rider a leader was lost, for want of a leader a battle was lost, for want of a victory a war was lost, for want of a plan a nation was lost.”

One variation of that could well be in the form of some ancient Chinese philosophies which are frequently rich in wisdom and truth and, regardless of their age, many of them are as applicable today as they have ever been. They frequently carry truths that apply to people and nations, regardless of the century in which we’re living. One of those gems is this one: “If there is righteousness in the heart, there will be duty in the character. If there is duty in the character, there will be harmony in the home. If there is harmony in the home, there will be order in the nation. When there is order in the nation, there will be peace in the world.”

This philosophy is both “simple” and “profound.” “Simple” is “not complex or complicated, as a machine of simple construction.” I believe you will agree that most of us appreciate some things that are simple and easy to understand, such as truth and integrity. The word “profound” is “deep, descending, or being far below the surface, not superficial.” Profound also means humble, as a profound reverence for the Supreme Being. That certainly gives us something to think about, doesn’t it? So, think about it and I’ll see you at the top!

Pure Positivity by Jim Stovall
Posted August 3, 2010 0 Comments and 0 Reactions All of us worry about having positive outcomes in our personal and professional lives. This worry stems from many sources, chief among them being the doubt surrounding our best efforts being good enough. All of us suffer from daydreams or nightmares of striving mightily and falling just short of the prize.

My late, great friend and mentor, John Wooden, was fond of saying, “Assume that your best is good enough.” Coach Wooden was far from an overoptimistic Pollyanna-filled dreamer. He was a realistic, down-to-earth man who achieved the highest goals imaginable by putting the right people in the right places and expecting them to perform at their best.

It is difficult, if not impossible, to perform at your best and expend the maximum effort if you are not certain that that effort will be rewarded.

I’m a firm believer that each of us were given certain passions, dreams, callings, and destinies in this life. Furthermore, I believe those dreams would not have been put inside of us if we did not have the capacity to achieve them. So the question is never: Can we succeed?; but the real question remaining is: Will we succeed?

A firm belief in success as a result of our own best efforts is essential to making our dreams come true. Doubting this, we will often modify our goals to a more mediocre level or simply quit entirely. After all, why should we strive for the proverbial impossible dream? Successful people are certain that no dream is impossible if it is worthy, worthwhile, and comes from the deepest part of our being.

If you are struggling in any area of your life, you must first examine your own expectations. I hate to be the one to tell you, but life at its essence is simply not fair. Life is great, grand, and wonderful but never fair. In this world, we don’t always get what we want, need, deserve, or earn; but we will, inevitably, get what we expect. Our expectations are the keys that make it possible to perform at the level necessary to succeed.

My friend Jack Nicklaus often says that he will never hit a golf shot until he sees himself swing properly and strike the ball correctly with the shot going exactly where he intended. He knows if he cannot see it in his mind, he will not execute it properly and, therefore, he will fail; however, once he can see the shot in his mind, he can create a positive expectation and then succeed.

If we are truly honest with ourselves, we will discover that our current position in every area of our lives is just about where we expect it to be. If you create a positive expectation of a better future, you will perform the tasks necessary to live it.

As you go through your day today, have a positive mental attitude knowing that your best is good enough.

Today’s the day!

Giants and Seeds By Jim Stovall
Posted July 31, 2010 0 Comments and 4 Reactions In business, everyone wants to “bag the elephant,” “hit a homerun,” or “land a whale.” While these are lofty goals and pursuits, most big deals started out as small deals that turned into a relationship.

This last week, I was in an elite meeting of investors, and we were hearing a message from one of the world’s top money managers. Being a former investment broker myself, I couldn’t help but think how much I would have wanted to have had a clientele like the group of people that was gathered in that room. In reality, most of those very large investors and their multimillion dollar accounts didn’t start out that way. They started out as modest investors that grew over the years.

For many years in my business career, I have worked with a great lawyer who began handling my legal matters when I first started out as an entrepreneur. My lawyer has a top reputation and deals with many elite clients. When I first met him, I told him that “I’m not really going to be a big client for you.” He laughed and assured me that most of his big clients started out just like I was beginning.

Unfortunately, too many people fail to treat small prospects like they would treat a big client. Big clients start out as small prospects, but they don’t come with a neon sign proclaiming their future value.

The world of philanthropy has been affected by the economic downturn. Many nonprofit organizations are seeking new donors. They are all looking for the “holy grail” which is the million dollar donor. In a recent study of these million dollar donors, it was discovered that the vast majority of them began giving to the organization many years earlier, and their first gift averaged $100.

We can only imagine how many hundred dollar donors over the years have not been treated with respect and gratitude, and failed to materialize as million dollar donors for that organization. They probably just went somewhere else where they felt welcome.

One of the most respected and beloved figures from my home state of Oklahoma, Will Rogers, was often said to have a quality of treating kings as if they were common and commoners as if they were kings. If we can do this, we will find that many of the seeds we planted years ago will grow into giant oaks that will provide shade and beauty for many years.

As you go through your day today, remember that the smallest of beginnings can culminate in the most amazing success.

Key Point: If you will treat everyone as though they’re important, as you would if your very livelihood counted on it you will find that as they grow (and inevitably they will) they will remember they were treated well early on and you’ll be compensated for having done so. You give excellent service because it’s the right thing to do, but ultimately it’s a seed that you plant early, and pays a bountiful harvest later.

Fail Your Way To The Top By John Assaraf
Posted June 6, 2010 1 Comment and 7 Reactions Have you had a challenging day or week? Feel a little tired or discouraged with a current situation? Ready to throw in the towel and quit something?

Don’t worry. It’s very normal to go through times of feeling that something in life stinks and all there is to see and feel is the current mess.

Here is something neat to ponder during those times, though. When doing battle with discouraged feelings, take a look at this report and reflect on this man’s record of failure. It is a testament to how humans can learn and grow and win despite the losses and defeats.

Failed in business in 1831
Defeated for legislature in 1832
Failed in business again in 1833
Elected to legislature in 1834
Sweetheart died in 1835
Nervous breakdown in 1836
Defeated for speaker in 1838
Defeated for land officer in 1843
Defeated for congress in 1843
Elected to congress in 1846
Defeated for re-election in 1848
Defeated for senate in 1855
Defeated for vice president in 1856
Defeated for senate in 1858
Elected President in 1860

Who was he?

He was a simple, uneducated, country boy who refused to allow his uncongenial circumstances to stop him. He refused to be a victim. He refused to accept failure. He refused to listen to people who told him he was crazy. He refused to stay down when he felt like nothing was going his way.

Simply put, he picked himself up no matter what and kept on going after his dream. He educated himself and did whatever it took to keep moving in the direction of his passions.

Who was he? Abraham Lincoln.

If you reflect back on your life, you can find patterns of the times you grew the most. Many of those times were probably a result of some kind of previous ‘failure,’ maybe even a series of them.

Remember: children don’t fail when they are learning to walk. They fall down over and over again. It is the falling that teaches them and strengthens them.

Each failure is a learning experience. And the faster people pick themselves up, reflect on the past occurrence and go again, the faster they can achieve their goals and dreams.

So with this in mind, choose the one thing that may not be going exactly as you wish right now and do one thing to move you closer to achieving the result you want. And remember, life is about learning and growing.

* Key Points To Consider: We can choose to either see adversity and times of challenge as life simply trying to beat us down, or we can make the decision to look beyond that simple outlook and focus instead on one that will serve us — one that says, the challenges we are experiencing are meant to allow us the opportunity to grow in some way — to emerge stronger, and better prepared for some eventual success that will be ours in the future.

Two very different ways to see things — not easy to do, but one will keep you stuck, while the other will serve you and allow you to become better for having faced it and ultimately overcome whatever challenge life threw at you. Self Belief is the First Step to Greatness By Kieran Revell
Posted June 1, 2010 0 Comments and 12 Reactions ‘Success is not governed by colour, creed, age or orientation: Success does not discriminate nor does it know boundaries. It does however depend upon dreams, persistence and self-belief. The moment you lose confidence in yourself, failure will follow’

Each of us, irrespective of means or circumstance, strives for some aspect of greatness in our lives. Each of us is a genius in some aspect of our existence. There are things I can do brilliantly, which others cannot. Similarly, there are things which others can do that I can’t. These are the things which drive us to greatness and empower all aspects of our world.

Unfortunately we often lose our way due to stress, outward pressures, distractions, reduced finances and a host of other impacting issues we allow to permeate our lives and derail us.

Each of us has a true purpose in life: Many of us continue from the cradle to the grave without realising just what it is. Others still, have a perfect vision in their minds of just what it is they are destined to achieve and exactly what it will take to get to that special place.

‘Never be afraid of what you might achieve. Instead, be more afraid of what you might not’

As children, we’re often told by those who should know better, that we’re not tall enough; smart enough; creative or good looking enough to do anything special with our lives. Often it’s a well intentioned parent, sibling, friend, neighbour or complete stranger who negatively impacts our psyche and sets us on a path to nowhere.

This can continue through our teenage, youth and young adult years to such an extent we actually believe the venom of others and adopt the negativity as our own. It impacts our lives and overshadows every aspect of our development.

Very often, those who bombard us with this negativity are endeavouring to shield us from disappointment (they have encountered) by imposing their values on us. They view our lives through their eyes and therefore, the image is distorted.

‘An acquired action will soon become a habit, with acceptance through quiet affirmation and dedicated application’

Others however are jealous of our drive, focus and determination: Perhaps they secretly see we have exactly what it takes to rise to the top and they do their best to stall our evolution so we remain at their base level, so they can smugly say to us, “I told you so!”

‘I autograph each and every day of my life with my personal signature of success. Achievement comes because I commit to ownership of my positive, results-driven actions’

There are several steps we can take to overcome these negative influences:

1. Build a wall of positive energy around ourselves by writing down our dreams and wishes in a journal. Wherever possible, refrain from including negative thoughts and emotions and instead be positive and upbeat;
2. Develop a Creation Board © on which you post positive words, phrases and pictures. Look at it every day and empower your life, especially in those times when you feel the darkness of negativity descending on your life;
3. Enrich your life every day with positive affirmations. These can be as simple as:-

* I am an incredibly creative person and my success is growing every day;

* I am a beautiful, healthy and happy person and my wonderful life is unfolding before me;
* Opportunities to be successful and abundant are manifesting every day in my life as I move closer to my dream of success and prosperity.

By empowering your life, you’re signaling to the Universe your intention to capitalise on the innate gifts you possess and in so doing, move past the negative blocks which threaten your future.

‘The difference between success and failure is not just one’s ability to dream, but the courage to follow them and take the steps necessary to embrace success’

It is important you build your self-belief and know beyond question you are a special and gifted person. You must empower your dreams with continued positive affirmations every day and in spite of what others might say/do, never give ownership of your dreams to another.

It could become a constant struggle. However, if you keep the horizon in sight and allow the light to shine on your life – even fleetingly – the moments of clarity and colour will continue as you step from the darkness of oppressive associations, into the light and sunshine of opportunity.

Never allow the mediocrity of others to impact your growth and development. Where they see failure, you must see success. Where they envisage only darkness, you must view sunshine and brightness. Where others see no future, you must embrace light, clarity and opportunity.

‘If you believe you can, you will: If you think you can’t, you won’t. Whatever you believe – you will inevitably become. Once you accept (positive thoughts and actions) negativity, you embrace (success) failure’

Self-belief also supports self-respect and where these two powerful tools abide so too do focus, drive, determination and optimism.

Keep hold of your dreams and goals, in spite of what others might say or do. Take charge of your destiny today and never allow darkness and gloom to dwell in your house. Wherever you go, you must create your future and nurture it through positive thoughts, words and actions every day.

‘My gratitude, love and optimism dictate the positive and lasting impact I have on others on a daily basis’

I wish you all a wonderfully empowered life. Live with courage and purpose and know beyond question you are destined for greatness. Open the door to the many opportunities which manifest in your life today.

Your future will unfold irrespective of what you do. Take affirmative action today to create something magnificent. You have the power: You possess the skills and you are enamored with the determination and skills to create and maintain a truly incredible existence.

‘Keep hold of your dreams and follow them, because they surely won’t follow you’

Making Room For Success! By Lisa Jimenez
Posted May 29, 2010 0 Comments and 0 Reactions Success is more about letting go, releasing and creating space than it is about adding to,learning more and gaining.

So, what do you choose to let go of today?

The more I work with my coaching clients the more I realize the power in this simple truth…

Success Needs Space…

Too often we fill our life with ‘too much’ stuff and there’s no room for success to come in;

Things like:

1. An over-active schedule and there’s no room for serendipity with a stop at a book store where your next recruit is buying a book… or a long, lingering lunch with a friend that makes you laugh so much your serotonin levels rise and you’re healthier… or a chapter in your book that you love writing… or tons of fulfillment that comes from doing a great job (because you allowed more time to do it).

2. Tons of limiting beliefs (and a voice that whispers them) that leave no room for new, empowering beliefs (and the voice that shouts them with power and confidence!)

3. A cluttered office or home that has no room for that brand new vase or picture frame waiting to be bought… or the cluttered mind that has no room for that ingenious idea waiting to be discovered.

You see, Success needs space. And you are the one who can usher in new levels of success by letting go of (fill in the blank.)

What are you willing to let go of today?

Just watch what you begin attracting into your life — with velocity — when you’re willing to let go, release, unlearn and create space for success.

To your success,

Lisa

Effort vs. Apathy by Jim Stovall
Posted May 21, 2010 1 Comment and 3 Reactions In business and in life, we should celebrate our victories and learn from our mistakes.

Today’s the day!
