All living spaces in houses should have adequate electric lighting. I mention lighting here because it is often (though not always) provided from the ceiling. Rooms or hallways without adequate lighting are a safety hazard.
Look for lighting in each room and in hallways and stairs. Best practice in hallways includes three-way switches so that the lights can be operated from either end. Three-way switches should be provided to operate the lights from the top and bottom of the stairs.
Wall switches often control on or both halves of duplex receptacles. This allows floor or table lamps to be turned on when someone enter the room.
