What Is A GFI?

A ground fault interrupter (GFI) is a special receptacle with ground fault protection. There is also ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI) which are circuit breakers installed at the panel to provide ground fault protection for the whole circuit. Let’s make sure we don’t get confused between grounding, ground fault circuit interrupters and fuses or breakers.
The equipment grounding wire in the branch circuits protects us by providing an emergency path for electricity when the electricity gets where it shouldn’t. The ground wire presents a path that’s more inviting to the electricity then flowing through us. If grounding systems work properly, we won’t get electrical shocks even when things go wrong.
