The most common downspout leaks are at connections to elbows and at seams.
There are typically two elbows in the elbows in the connector that joins the gutter to the top of the downspout. Clogging, leaking, and disconnecting are common problems with this connector.
The implications of leaking downspouts are similar to missing downspouts.
Depending on the extent and duration of leakage, and whether it occurs near the top or bottom of the wall, damage can be severe.
It may be difficult to spot leaking downspouts except when it is raining. Look carefully for streaking at elbows and connections. The seam on metal downspouts is usually at the back of the downspout against the wall.
Mechanical damage can occur anywhere, but is common on downspout extensions which are flattened from being stepped on or driven over by lawn mowers. Latters and tree branches can also cause mechanical damage.
